He writes: "Fremantle Prison was built by convict labor in the 1850s, and after convict transportation from the UK ceased in 1868 it became Western Australia's major civilian prison, and was only decommissioned in 1991. It is now a registered heritage building, open to visitors.

"This unscreened urinal stands in one of the exercise yards. Although you can see a toilet to the right of the picture, in their cells the prisoners had nothing more than a slop bucket, which they emptied each morning into the structure in front of this urinal."
