The first picture was taken at the Kilauea Visitor Center and the second at the Thurston Lava Tube. The most prominent feature of the park is the Kilauea Volcano, which has been very active in recent years. At the time the pictures were taken in 2002, visitors were able to view flowing lava only yards away from the park road.
